Art Academy News
For each class in which students were enrolled, they may exhibit one piece. In order to be included, you must drop off your artwork at the Academy on December 1 or 2 between the hours of 1 to 4 pm. If you have questions, please contact the Academy. You do not want to miss this celebration of ART! Mark your calendars now. Students who are exhibiting are asked to bring an appetizer to share. Awardees will be announced in our January issue of this newsletter.
Forty classes are available at the Academy this winter beginning the week of January 5 and running through March 20. Classes range from one half day to 9 weeks in length. The brochures were mailed on November 20th to your homes. If you did not receive one, you may go to www.artleaguehhi.org and click on Art Academy classes and then click on current schedule. You may also call the Academy at 843.842.5738.
During the winter session, we have two instructors returning to the Academy after a lengthy absence: Candace Lovely and Janet Dent. Janet will be teaching a late afternoon watercolor class on Mondays while Candace will be teaching “plein air” techniques with oils on Tuesday evenings.
Instructor and lecturer Mary Kelly will be offering a series on worldwide folk art on Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 pm from January 29 through February 26. Participants will travel with Mary (via slides) as she visits the Greek Islands, Scandinavia, the Ukraine, and South America. Some sessions will include a hands-on demonstration of techniques with your chance to try your hand. For more information, call the Academy office.
In addition, a Hilton Head Island Middle School art teacher, Sherry Kahle, will be teaching a ceramics course at her school for our students on Wednesday afternoons. Island resident Linda Wellenbach will be offering a unique program for youth (ages 12 and up) on Saturday mornings. The class is entitled “Flying Home by Bus, a Playful Journey to You.” In addition, instructor Shelly Ayende will again be offering children (ages 7-12) an exploratory art class on color and line on Saturday mornings.
Life drawing class with nude models will be offered again each Monday evening from January 12 through March 9 if we have our minimum number of students necessary to run each class. The fee is $10 per session for Art League members and current students. Contact the Academy administrator at 842-5738 if you wish to be put on the e-mail reminder list.
