President's Message
As we near the end of our first year in our new home, it is fitting that our fall member meeting was held in the Greer gallery last week. Many of you turned out for it and we thank you for coming and showing interest in League activities. For those of you unable to attend, you will find a summary of the meeting topics in this newsletter.

The biggest issues facing us as we close our fiscal year are funds. There are two things you can all do to help us finish the year in the black: Renew your membership now, before the close of the year, and think seriously about stepping up your membership level. It is a big job keeping all our wonderful programs running smoothly and simply stepping up one level from your normal membership level could go a long way.

Secondly, our fun "Got Art?" fundraiser is just around the corner - Sunday November 20th. If you are an exhibiting artist and intend to donate a piece of your work, email Donna Varner now: dvgallery@dvgallery.us with your information. If you'd like a chance at one of the artworks for only $100, purchase a ticket soon. There are only 100 for sale. Stop by the gallery or call any board member - we all have them to sell. And don't forget to tell your friends and neighbors.

Playing With Fire
Yesterday we had the opening of a unique art exhibit at the Art League of Hilton Head Gallery. Two award winning artists, Ann Bannister and Virginia MacKenzie will present an all-encaustic art exhibit which has been two years in the making. It is called “Playing With Fire”.

Encaustic art which uses pigmented melted beeswax mixed with damar resin is an ancient art medium. Thousands of years ago, the Greeks and the Egyptians made life size mummy portraits in wax on wood panels which were then attached to the coffins. A number of these portraits are in perfect condition to this day. The word encaustic is a Greek word that means “to burn in”. After the wax is applied to the substrate, it is fused with a heat gun or torch to make it solid and permanent.

This versatile medium is well suited for abstracts, three-dimensional effects, atmospheric illusion, luscious organic florals and landscapes. Encaustic can be used in combination with watercolor, pastel, oil, photography, collage, printmaking, or gold leaf. It can be fused, scraped, poured, inscribed, dipped or burnished.
